Love it or hate it, the Silent Hill movie was a visually stunning movie. And while the movie borrowed liberally from the franchise in order to craft it's story, it did bring a very original and factually inspired idea to the franchise.
In the movie, the town of Silent Hill was once a thriving coal mining town that was abandoned after suffering an unimaginable accident; the entire mine caught fire and is continually burning under the town itself. While this may just seem like a completely ludicrous idea that some screen writer came up with, it's not. In fact, it is 100% true and actually happened to the town of Centralia, Pennsylvania.
If you'd like to learn more about the very true and very tragic story of the town Centralia and how the screenwriters of "Silent Hill" became inspired by its story you can read more about it HERE.
